CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Nations that seek to achieve rapid economic growth and development are required to ensure that they have better and improved educational reforms. Education is considered as a driving force in the process of economic development of a country. Economic development can be defined as the process of investing existing resources that can be utilized for increasing production in the coming years. Therefore, as education leads to rapid economic development, it can be considered as a form of both consumption and investment. Hence, it is important for government to develop influential educational reforms for the development of economy.
Statement of the Problem
The widespread recognition that tertiary education is major driver of economic competitiveness in an increasingly knowledge driven global economy, has made it essential for both developed and developing nations to have high-quality tertiary education. It is important for the nations to ensure that they have transformed their educational reforms for betterment of the economy.
Thus, as a result of recognizing this need North Korea has been keen to pursue a complete revolution in their educational system for which the economy has been struggling to get rid of its former education system that was memorization oriented and cramming (Idrc & Orbicom, 2009). The nation has devoted significant efforts to provide children with appropriate education by eliminating the barriers of financial difficulties to achieve higher literacy rate of the economy.
Therefore, the purpose of this research is to expand the horizon of existing knowledge related to North Korean education system and determine the need to transform literacy field for the students in the state in the 21st century and in coming years. Thus, the research is aimed at exploring “the strategies adopted by the government to overcome the challenges associated with providing better education system to students in North Korea and to compete in the knowledge driven global economy”.
It is important for the government of every nation to ensure that each child is provided with equal opportunity to access high-quality education that is essential for equalized human development. Hence, the challenge for the nation is to implement educational reforms that will enable the children to access high-quality education that is available to the students in the developed nations such as America; thus, for this purpose the government can implement NCLB (No Child Left Behind) act, which was formerly known as Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) (Jeong, 2006).
