Introduction to Education

Education is a very broad term that can be interpreted in an indefinite number of ways. Nonetheless despite one's definition of education, it can be said that education does in fact have some sort of a purpose or goal.

Education encompasses teaching and learning specific skills and also something more tangible, but more profound: the imparting of knowledge, positive judgment and well developed wisdom. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), early childhood education spans the human life from birth to age 8, making early childhood education one of the most important foundations in any human life. Followed by Primary Education for about six or seven years, in adolescent years you would be receiving Secondary Education. Third stage is Higher Education that would be the college or university years. Last but not least, is Adult Education. In fact education is the most important skill that anybody must have to succeed in life. Choosing a career in education can be overwhelming since education offers a wide range of career options. Of course you must also take into consideration; monetary remuneration, pros and cons, duties as an educator, and opportunities in today's world. Also if it is the right career for you since it is a very consuming and demanding career.



Education in History

In prehistoric societies, young boys and girls received their practical education in the way of hunting, gathering food and constructing shelters by working closely with those who possessed those essential skills. Formal education did not really begin until 5000 years ago when a system of writing both words and numbers was invented. Of course, education was nothing like it is today. For instance education was only for boys in Ancient Greece. Boys began to study reading, writing, arithmetic, music and dance. As a big difference from today they went to different teachers in different locations for each subject instead of going to school as we do today. The first large scale education system evolved in the ancient Roman Empire around 100 B.C. In difference with the Greek education, it was also provided education for girls. Students also learned to read and write Latin and Greek. In the middle ages Christian Churches controlled most formal education, making education only available for rich families.

Education and its value

Education is the most important achievement of a persons' lifetime. The possibilities and accomplishments become virtually endless once you have achieved a college education. One can tailor their education toward specific areas of learning to become anything they want in American society. Having an education not only gives you the promise of a decent life, but produces self confidence and self esteem. Knowledge is the most important tool that America bestows upon her citizens.
