The Role of Education and Conflict, With Particular Reference to Syria
Introduction
Syria is a country that is situated between the Lebanon and Turkey. It is near Mediterranean Sea. There are about 20 million people who are there in Syria. As far as the demographics of the country is concerned, it is largely composed of the Muslim population. There are about three quarters of Sunni Muslim in Syria. Off late, Syria has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Ironically, it was the creation of the face book page that started these riots at the first place. In that page, the Syrian civilians were called upon to protest against the anti human policies of the current regime. The protests were about to be initiated again the current regime of President Bashaar ul Assad. With the passage of time, the tension in the region escalated.
Link with Human Capital Theory
The present situation is linked with the human capital theory and it ahs to be viewed in that context. The theory is resting on the argument about formal education is something that is important if the productive capacity of the population is increased. The efficiency and the productivity of the workers can be increased by increasing the stock of productive human capital. Thus it is important that education must be viewed as something that is important to increase the innate abilities of the people.
Pressures Faced by the Government
The government was facing pressure from the overall international community to take control of the situation and to come up with the better solution of this problem. There were propositions of strict sanctions against Syria from Europe and Syria and the current wave of violence was needed to be controlled by the Government. There were some voices that were favouring the regime of Bashaar ul Assad mainly Russia and China.
Problems in Provision of Basic Rights of the Citizen
One of the bigger problems that arise as a result of these conflicts is that countries that are affected by them are not really taking care of the basic rights of their citizens. Whenever there is a conflict, it is seen that there is lot of fragility in the way things are going in that part of the world. The problem is that there is lot of power struggle in the region, and due to that, the accessibility of the quality education and management of the education is the first thing that suffers when there is such case.
Political and Economic Stability
The economic and political instability in Syria is one of the prime contributors behind the declining standard of education in that region. There are many barriers to the education as well when one talks about situation in Syria. The basic thing is that there is lack of investment in the educations and due to this, the availability of the economic resource is in the jeopardy.
