History of Adult Education

Introduction

United States of America has an education system that is probably the most diverse, decentralized, and dynamic at the same time, unless only one of its kind in the world. The federal government is very little involved in the formation of educational policy in subsidizing or higher. Responsibility for education lies with the state governments, but rather formally, as they and delegates their powers for the governance of education to local authorities; in thousands of educational circuits in the United States as a consequence there is a 5O educational system, the operation of which depends mainly on taxpayers (Klein, 2012). In the formation of educational policy at the state government level involved senior officials, judges, state education authorities, and thousands of local communities. In addition, there is a fairly complex, parallel system of private educational institutions, both at lower and higher levels of education. Decentralization has enabled the development of a wide range of educational institutions (U.S. Department of State, n.d.).

Adult education as phenomenon came around during the 19th century. The need for adult education was necessitated by the gradually advancing society (Korsgaad, 1995). Having been through the industrial revolution more and more adults were needed to acquire technical skills. These skills would enable them to be able to operate machines in factories and to perform other technical functions. Tradition did allow for youngsters going to school and set an educational base for himself. The adults in many cases may not have been able to afford going to school when they were young. With the passage of time, they realized how important it was to be educated and what kinds of advantages they with the benefit of education (Kulich, 2005).

There was the initial social problem associated with adult education. Many adults used to feel embarrassed in going back to school after so many years. However, we are in the 21st century those social problems of the past are but forgotten. Being in the 21st century, it is unfortunate to note that there still is a huge population of adults who have not received proper education (Kulich, 2005). The reasons could be various, from monetary issues to family issues where they were forced to drop out.

Discussion

The education system in New York is highly effective. It possesses characteristics that are important and that help the students in getting education in the most efficient manner. It is important for the people to know more about the education system as it will help in knowing as to what is beneficial for them and what is not. In New York, the primary and secondary schools are mostly run by the local authorities. They offer two-year courses at the university for half of high school graduates. In addition, individual states function as both public and private schools, higher education (colleges) and universities. These are the major strengths of the New York education system (Salas, 2011).
