Assessment is the process of gathering information about students, the curriculum, and the school environment through informal observations, discussions, performance tasks, formal assignments, portfolios, or tests. Although many assessments are created at the district, state, or national levels, teachers can also construct quality assessments. Students demonstrate their learning through presentations, products (artwork, models, etc.), performances, or traditional tests. Teachers might also gather information to assess the quality of instruction or the classroom environment to improve their teaching efforts (Egan, 2001).
