Introduction

The premise behind the American Public School was to enlighten the generations of America with literacy skills. The concept of American Public Schools was widely accepted and implemented in all the states. The American Public School is publicly funded as well as publicly controlled. Curriculum as one aspect that was controlled by the school districts varying from one state to the other. It was in the decade of the 1960's that numerous schools did away with the effort to teach values as well as character and incorporate it with them. This is the source of debates since many decades the question being whether teachers should be allowed to contribute to the character development of students or it is said to be an infringement of the rights of the parents. In my opinion, teachers not only have the right but it is also their obligation to contribute to the character development of students.

Discussion

Character education is said to be taught by the families and it is the mental conditioning of the families that shapes the personality of the individuals. Considering the current environment today I believe that character education is lacking in the youth of today and it is fueled by the deteriorating structures of the family and it is also said to entail declining trends in the character of the youth. The generation of today is already said to be deficient of ethical values hence resulting in higher number of crimes and higher of conflicts. Consequently, it becomes the responsibility of the teachers to teach and pass on the moral values to the students.
