In the field of health science, so many things comprised the importance of compassion. The health related career that interests me the most is an Occupational Therapist. I choose this career because they help people regain their ability to do something that they used to do. Practioner's must have patience and skills, but as well as a sincere commitment to helping others. For me, one of the great appeals of occupational therapy is the opportunity it presents for hands on care. The therapeutic environment is centered on directly improving quality of life of the patient. It is this type of very tangible care that appeals to me. I believe it is my greatest strength.
I learned most of what I know about nurturing and healing from watching my father.
A highly regarded physician within our community, he was completely dedicated to improving the lives of others. He was a Cuban exile, and he beats all the odds by moving to the United Stated, putting himself through college and graduating at the top of his medical school class. I have always believed that his ability to navigate hardships in life made him so understanding. His bottom line was not money or success, but helping. Cliché as it sounds, he approached medicine with the idealism that most profess but which few practice.
My first job was working at his office, first as an assistant and eventually as the office manager during my college years. During that time I was earning my undergraduate degree in psychology at Florida International University. Watching my father's example, I was sure that I wanted to build a career around helping others. However, over time, I found myself drawn to the more Physiological interactions with patients. I was fascinated by the science of the human body, and curious about taking my skills in a different direction. After college, I took a job as a medical billing consultant, in an effort to pay off some student loans. It was something like that this time I first promised my father that I was going to continue my formal education. I also told him that I wanted to dedicate my life to work and help children. Not long after, my father unexpectedly passed away, and my life was turned upside down. Suddenly, nothing seemed important.
