Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to explain the relation between psychology and individuals with bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa and binge eating disorder. In this research we studied eating disorders and psychological disorders co-occur at high rates and can have functionally similar symptoms. According to the previous researches eating disorders are practically all the time treated with some form of psychiatric and psychological treatment.

Eating disorders and it's relation to psychology

Introduction

Eating disorder is basically a disease that causes very serious instability and disturbances to a person's daily diet, by eating tremendously small amount of foodstuff or extreme over eating is also considered being as abnormal eating patterns. These disorders, which usually have a psychological component, may lead to underweight, malnutrition and obesity. A person with an eating disorder may become obsessed with food or may eat very low amount, the urge for food is uncontrollable. Severe pain, distress and concern about body mass or shape may also characterize an eating disorder.

Gender

Mostly the eating disorder sufferers are females but males can also get afflicted rarely. An exception is binge eating disorder, which appears more in males, as compared to females (Carlat, DJ. et al,1991)

Age factor

Disorder of eating can occur in any age, it is mostly observed in teenagers or adolescent and young adults but it may also develop in childhood and in aged people, as well. There are three general types of eating disorders:

Bulimia nervosa

Binge eating

Anorexia nervosa

Types OF Eating Disorder

Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder.

Anorexia nervosa

An individual refusing to maintain simply a normal body weight which is due diminished appetite is known to be as Anorexia. Anorexia nervosa is observed when a person body weight becomes 15% less than the normal healthy, body weight as per the standard with respect to the height (BMI). At one angle it is considered to be an anxiety driven disorder, in which an individual develops an extreme fear of becoming fat ,putting on weight and thus quit eating, obsessively they keep on doing exercises, self-induced vomiting i.e. they forcefully tries to vomit and use laxatives to reduce weight. As soon as their body starves they experience following changes:

Extreme thinness (emaciation) with intense fear of gaining weight

Menstruation among girls and women ceases.

Severe constipation.

Hair/nails become brittle.

Lethargy, Depression and sluggishness, or feeling tired all the time.

Body image gets distorted followed by low self-esteem which is prejudiced by perceptions of body.

Dry skin, with yellowish pale complexion.

Muscles along with the heart muscle waste away accompanying mild anemia.

Multi organ failure.

Brain damage.

Slowed breathing.

Low pulse rate and blood pressure.

Fine hair grow all over the body.

Infertility.
