Chapter: Literature Review

Introduction

This chapter reviews the literature pertinent to this study. This chapter covers the literature review about the child development in general, and learning and development of children during the foundation stage and KS1. The chapter starts by highlighting the general aspects of development and growth of children from the time of their birth to eight years of their age and follows with an illustration of the way child development influences practices of parents, care takers and teachers for the order of ascertaining the best of their children's development. Then it provides a review of the role of adults in the learning and development of their children. The main objective of this study is enlightened in the elucidation of the key phases, stages, experiences during the years 0-8 of children, presented in this chapter of the study.

Child Development

Child development serves a vital role in building up the personality of a child as they grow up. To live a momentous and a gratifying life, there are two areas that hold most of the significance for people. Intellectual capability and interpersonal relationships define the appropriate development of a child. Researchers are interested in attending to the concerns which lead to arousing negative behavioral responses in children. Bennett is of the belief that the experiences of children during the initial phases on life, association with their family members, close affiliation with parents, and social upbringing, influence the formation of their behavior that defines the positive as well as negative enthused responses of their behavior. Learning and development of children is categorized in various dimensions that vary with as per context and influence on the behavior of children (Bennett, 2008, pp. 919-928).

Bronfenbrenner asserts that there are several factors that concurrently impact the emotional, physical and mental development of children. Child development is established in accordance with these three fundamental dimensions that elucidate the consequences of a child's behavior with his growth and nurture. Each of these three dimensions are allied to one another; any deficiency or short coming in concern in any one of these ultimately influence the rest of the two. Responses of a child's behavior are the results of the experiences they had had in their initial years of life. It is however eminent to attend to the prime areas associated to the development of a child which can cause latent issues in the usual nurturing of the child (Bronfenbrenner, 1998, pp. 993-1029).

Learning and development during Foundation Stage and KS1

Many researchers, including Lombardi, maintain that every child can learn however every child does not learn in a similar manner with the same tempo at the same time; learning is an autonomous procedure.
