Introduction

The history of American literature has presented several works that are an advocacy of the rights of women on the grounds of social, political and economic equality with their male counterparts. Published in the year 1899, Kate Chopin's The Awakening is one such literary work that represents the spirit of the early feminist movement between the 1880s and 1930s. The book addresses several critical social issues that were prevalent at that time in largely patriarchal American societies such as social underrepresentation of women and gender inequality.
