Dyslexia

Abstract

Over the last century researchers who are concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of dyslexia have attempted to answer the questions like, what is it, what are its causes it and what can be done about it?

In this case study I will provide a deeper understanding of the causes of Dyslexia taking in to account current research and how it is relevant to teaching and learning in the context of the role and practice of a specialist teacher.

I will then go on to critically appraise a wide range of teaching and learning programmes which specialists use as well as to critically evaluate and reflect upon my own developing practice as a trainee specialist and the practice of other qualified professionals in the field of SpLD Dyslexia.

Finally I will analyse literature pertaining to SpLD Dyslexia and evaluate it, to take into account how practice, issues of social, emotional and community issues can affect dyslexic learners and their families.

Introduction

Etymologically the word dyslexia means about language difficulties. In the sense now refers to reading problems, disruption in the acquisition of reading. A first definition of simple dyslexia is telling us that are the problem for learning to read who have children whose coefficient intellectual is standard and do not appear other physical or psychological problems that might explain these difficulties. According to some statistics the dyslexia affects more or less to 10% or 15% of the school and adult. It affects an equal measure for children, but in my practice I have seen many more boys than girls and English statistics speak of a ratio of 8 to 1 in the number of boys and girls affected. This may have to do with the fact that it is considered that women generally have a greater development in the area of language than men. There is consensuses that between 4 and 5% of children have serious problems learning to read, with the consequent difficulty writer. Given the spread of education to the entire population on a mandatory and priority use of the reading and writing as mediators of education, the number of children with learning difficulties from this cause is a factor relevant to take into account the teacher. According to statistics cited above can be expected in every classroom of 25 students at least one child with this learning difficulty.

A good definition is given M.Thomson "is a serious difficulty with the written form of language, which is independent of any cause intellectual, cultural and ...
