CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background of the research

Prisons in England and Wales offer a variety of drug interventions. Counseling, Assessment, Referral, Advice and through Care (CARAT) services are obtainable in all prisons of England and Wales, and reviews prisoners for drug associated needs and refer to suitable drug services and suggest individual therapy and teamwork. Drug rehabilitation services are also provided in prisons of England and Wales. Community and clinical populations have observed a strong relationship between the usage of drug, principally heroin and cocaine, and aberrant behavior.

Treatment with the drug addicts who interventional therapy before more deep-rooted history of drug problems, but also involved criminal liability. This may explain this finding; treatment is the treatment of detainees in the past need to predict. To increase treatment participation may be used in assessing the incentive technology, rather than relying on self-referral. Further research is needed to assess how short the work incentives of prisoners in England and Wales may be the background. It was also commented that the drug problem among prisoners is a wider social exclusion and vulnerability indicators and a range of interventions, we must solve this problem. The results support this conclusion and suggestions for treatment, should be coordinated with other services to address these linked problems.

Problem Statement

Regardless of the development of treatment opportunities for prisoners in recent years in England and Wales prisons, concern has been articulated that the levels and kinds of drug treatment are not sufficient to meet the needs of drug user and offenders.

Aims and Objectives

The main aim of this study is to reflect identity and criticize the study of the intended treatment interventions provided for prisoners presenting with problems of drug use at reception in England and Wales.

Research Question

Discuss the impact of drug use and perceived treatment needs among newly sentenced prisoners in England and Wales

Rationale of the Study

This study is to assist in determining the appropriate treatment plan for the prisoners with drug use, health and social factors. This study is conducted on large population scale that is national level and its subjects are provided through randomised sampling which is likely to yield rational and reliable results.



Significance

This research will be investigating the drug usage among newly convicted prisoners, prior to their custody, employed to an all-purpose longitudinal inspection. In accordance with the past studies (Bullock, 2003), it will be focusing on the major prevalent drugs which were being used by prisoners: heroin, crack cocaine, cocaine powder, amphetamines and cannabis. As the reception into custody is a decisive phase of evaluation and verdict planning. The research will also inspect prisoners' own perceptions of the need for the treatment.
