Role, Responsibilities and Boundaries

My role, responsibilities and boundaries, in terms of a DSA approved driving instructor, are as follows.

Identify Needs

The most important aspect in teaching or instructing is to identify the need and the knowledge level of the student. Some student may be of beginner level while others can be little above. I am a DSA approved driving instructor, and it is my responsibility to value each student individually. Driving is skilful art and can become dangerous at times, therefore, I should make the student driver safe, confident and considerate while teaching.

It is necessary to have the skills and behaviour for the performance of the monitor function, ensuring that I have the prerequisite training required. I should successfully complete (with a pass mark of 75%) of basic training that will help me to enhance my skills of driving. Being a certified driving instructor, my role is to create opportunities for learning through high-quality teaching that will enable the development and progression of all learners, so that they learn driving quickly and effectively without any obstacles. Any gaps in the learners' knowledge will be acknowledged and incorporated into the session plans.

Plan and Design

After identifying the need, the next step in the cycle is to plan and design the lessons. Preparing a lesson plan involves, setting some clear, appropriate and most importantly achievable aims and objectives, preparing routes, and teaching material, evaluating the students, myself and my way of delivering the lesson, to maintain progress cards to record their progression. As Petty states, “If learners do not know what they are trying to do, they are most unlikely to do it (Petty, 2004).”

The system of learning should be designed to make the process of learning to drive as easy and as efficient as possible. It represents the culmination of many years experience of successfully getting people through the driving test. The following lesson notes provide an ideal learning aid to a person who wants to learn driving. There will be lessons; each lesson will be designed to meet certain learning objectives. The lessons build up for driving skill naturally in small and easy steps.

Part 1 Lessons - Basic control skills

This part will give the basic control skills needed to drive safely. This is the starting point for most people and essential if a person has no previous driving experience.

Part 3 Lessons - Traffic skills
