The theme of Dream Variations is to not ever give up; its lesson is that giving up is tantamount to death.

Culturally, Hughes most prolific composing time span was in the late 1920s through the 1930s.  He is advised amidst the most significant of the action called "The Harlem Renaissance."  The Harlem Renaissance was created of mainly African-American creative individuals who "simultaneously conveyed yearn for an incorporated world and an alert to those who would trial to hold the very dark rush subservient." This verse expresses those sentiments.  It is a support for those demoralized by racism to extend the good battle and be guaranteed that one day they will glimpse their dreams become reality (Rummel, 2006). 

Encountering this verse for the first time when I was 12, it directly became my very well liked verse and has stayed so. The intent and imagery is still mighty and encapsulates my sentiments on the subject. I have habitually been marked a dreamer, occasionally in derision, and while some of my dreams have arrive factual, other ones stay in the amber of hopefulness, this verse a reminder not to stop on them.

The need of punctuation emphasizes the stark metaphors, which are reside things that are now still. The bird is not dead, but hurt and it may recover. A winter area comprises plants under the snowfall, either untamed blossoms or plantings that will blossom when it warms. There is a likelihood that the bird may not mend, but pass away and the area will drown in mud. But that will only occur if dreams are extinguished. Not in the explosive way of Hughes' A Dream Deferred, but in a calm, deflated way that appears more final.
