Introduction

The poem by Dylan Thomas, titled, “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night” is the poem about old age and death. This poem has six stanzas and has a simple rhyming structure which contradicts the complexity of the message which is being presented by the poem. In a look, the poems seems to be about death, however, upon closer examination the poem gives a message about life and the way the life is lived. Thomas has used different techniques in his poem like imagery, Alliteration etc. the thesis of the poem is clearly stated in the first stanza of the poem which demonstrates what the poet feels about life and death. About the Poet

Dylan Thomas is an English poet who was born in 1914 and died in 1953. Dylan Thomas was born in Swansea, a coastal city of Wales. His father David graduated in English and writer brought his son to speak English rather than Welsh as her mother spoke. Thomas spent most of his childhood in Swansea, apart from regular trips to the farm owned by the Carmarthen family of his mother. These stays rural, different from the atmosphere of the city, much influenced his work may be observed in many short stories, works in radio or in the poem Fern Hill (Cummings, pp. 67).

Thomas wrote half of his work while living in the family home of 5 Cwmdonkin Drive (the most famous poem is: And Death Shall Have No Dominion). In November 1934, his first collection of poetry, 18 Poems, was published. It was then one of the most exciting young poets writing in English. His language is rich and sonorous, and images sometimes reach a beauty hard to beat. In return, the reading is sometimes a bit complicated (half cryptic images). Dylan Thomas is seen across the Channel as one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century. He was a man of great thirst, unquenchable. The poetry of Dylan Thomas is cosmic, telluric. It starts from the profusion of his inner world, full of images and fury, to go to the chaos of stars. "There was a world and here is another ... (Auden & Holmes, pp. 56)."Dylan Thomas draws on his pantheism vibrating nature, which he celebrates the glorious hills, the deep sea, as in" visions and prayers "to sing the cosmos. But his singing carnal and sensual, as Dylan Thomas is primarily a sensual poet, adds his mystical impulses, even metaphysical. The Bible so often punctuated his childhood irrigates with its notions of good and evil, demons and temptations.
