According to James Barszcz, when compared with distance learning courses and programs, which provide the opportunity to train more people better and at a significantly lower cost, classroom-based learning programs are more effective at drawing out qualities of intellect and character in a student. In his essay “Can you be educated from a distance?”, James highlights the growing trend of distance-based learning programs, citing that nearly 90 percent of the larger schools and colleges of America offer distance learning - the University of Phoenix is mentioned as an example . James then identifies a few reasons for their increasing popularity.

The concept of distance learning, although not that recent an invention, has only become popular in the last decade. This is because, through distance learning, learning and teaching can successfully be ensured through the establishment of a channel of communication between a teacher and his students, even if they are separated by a great distance (Abels, 2005). However, this concept has attracted as much scorn and contempt among people as it has inspired hope and excitement.

James does well to identify the pros and cons of distance learning by drawing a comparison between them. For instance, he agrees that, in both developed as well as developing nations, distance learning has promoted greater and easier access to learning. Another unparalleled benefit of distance learning is that it offers students the flexibility of scheduling their classes and courses. This allows the students with the freedom to compete the course at their own pace.

According to James, another important reason why distance learning courses have become popular is that they are relatively cheaper as compared to classroom-based programs.
