Discrimination in Education

The United States of America is one of the countries where the issues of racism, sexism and discrimination remain at large. Most of the educational institutions in the United States, primarily schools experience continuous variations in their policies. For most of the failures of policies, teachers are blamed instead of the policy makers. At the school, the primary concern of the management is not “what” we teach during the class, it is “How” we teach that is evaluated (Solorzano et.al, pp. 2-3). During my first year as a sixth grade history teacher, I encountered many epiphanies related to the discrimination and racism. The majority of my students are white while some black students are also present in my class. Being a history teacher, I have to teach white history to those black kids, which provokes the factors of racism, sexism and discrimination among children. The textbook that I refer to, along with the text books of other schools contain hateful and vicious values that indirectly leads the educators to teach as well as promote the factors of racism and discrimination which eventually result in the behavioral change in the student as well as the teachers (Sue et.al, pp.183-184).

In my personal experience, I have an African background. I faced many cases of discrimination and racism in my professional life. My school is located in the area in which majority of the people have white ethnic background, so most of the teachers and students have different ethnic background than mine. Though I did not face any violent attitude, but the attitude of my colleagues towards me is not much friendly.
