Discrimination in American Workforce

Introduction

In recent years American societies have become multicultural societies where people from different cultures, race, religion, ethnicity and genders have moved towards America so that they can live a prosperous life. Among these immigrants large number includes the African American who faces inequality on the basis of color and gender when they opt for an employment opportunity. In America discrimination is also done between men-women and black-white when both apply for an employment opportunity. According to Beilby, (2000) The gender gap in the amount of earning among full-time workers and salary based workforce is about 25% which means that women earn 75% as much as the men. The discrimination gap between African American and whites is 22%. The rate of segregation on the basis of gender declined between 1970s and 1990s. The overall unemployment rate is decreasing but for African Americans the unemployment rate is double of the white Americans unemployment rate. EEO legislation was a product of the movement that was started against discrimination, and wanted to seek equality not only in employment, but also in education, accommodation facilities, health services, politics, government programs and also in other areas. The study will find out the reasons of discrimination that is done between African and whites of America, also the discrimination that is done between men and women.

According to Darity & Mason, (1998) in the American society there is existence of racial disparity and discrimination. Most of the discrimination is found in the labor markets where people from all races and cultures apply for the employment opportunities available in the economy. There are several kinds of evidences found through research, quoted in the newspaper, reported in the media and other sources of information that discrimination is being done in terms of ranks, wages, opportunities and other job facilities that are provided to different people of different race and gender. There are also researches that suggest that the racial discrimination declined during 1965 to 1975. It was further explained that during this phase discrimination among black males dropped and during 1973-1994 the discrimination among the women declined. The Civil Rights Act of 1964were a major breakthrough in giving black Americans their rights to avail equal opportunities like other citizens of America and also played a vital role in decreasing the discrimination of women. A survey was conducted about the employment section of major newspapers like Chicago Times, New York Times, Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post. The advertisements posted were clearly mentioning that only white Americans can apply for the job and almost none of the job was available for people from other race. Similarly there were advertisements that were portraying gender discrimination clearly as the jobs available for the men included: chef, accountant, assistant manager, manager, salesmen, general, director and other highly respected jobs but on the other hand jobs for females include: secretaries, typist, bookkeepers, waitress, stenographers and other household or domestic work jobs.
