Diplomatic Efforts Intensify On Corralling Syrian Chemical Arms
On Wednesday, a change had witnessed in international politics when pressure on Syria tighten to control its chemical weapons (Reuters, 2013). In this regard, the representative of United Nations Human Rights also claimed that Syria surpassed war crimes against its own people. On Tuesday, U.S secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov met in Geneva and extensively talked about the possible chances of eliminating the Syrian chemical weapon arsenal. After one day, they reaffirmed this on the telephone and publically stated their intention of “Collective Action”.
Role of Veto Powers
The five permanent powers of UN Security Council namely USA, Britain, Russia, China and France preferred resolution against the military attack. This was decided in the meeting of UN Security Council at New York. The ambassadors of these countries also held a meeting at the UN Russian mission. Something confidential things had decided and at the end of meeting nothing was informed to public. It looks there is something serious is decided, and these countries will take action in the near future if Syria does not stop the usage of chemical weapons.
The step in this line was taken by France when it presented a draft in the Security Council and called for an ultimatum to the Assad's government. In the draft, it said that to stop the usage of chemical weapons or face the punitive steps. Russia objected the language of draft as it has soft attitude towards the Syria. However, diplomats are working on the issue and trying to made alternative draft agreeable to all members especially Britain, USA and France.
