Digital Forensics - A Case of Omega Corporation

Introduction

The world has been surrounded by science and information technology in the modern era like it was never before. The continuous advancements in the technology have aided the people and organizations to improve their efficiency towards their day-to-day work and also the operations and processes followed by the organizations. However, as it is said that, every story has two sides. With the opportunities brought by information technology, there also include some threats. People have also started to use technology for wrongdoings by stealing others information for their benefits.

Computer crime is a commonly known term used for the acquiring and/or stealing other's information. It includes transmitting or downloading digital files through electronic means. This also includes theft of hardware, software, applications, and other intellectual properties of others (Meyers, & Rogers, 2004). In order to fight against the digital and computer crimes, experts have come up with even bigger technological solution; digital forensics.

Digital forensics is defined as a process which tends to uncover and interpret electronic data and information for using them in a criminal or civil court of law. It is a branch of forensic science, which studies the legal matters of digital and technological field (Gupta, et.al, 2011). The evidences acquired through digital forensics always are presented in digital format, such as email, software program, computer document, digital photograph or video, text, or any other record being digitally present and available to be presented in front of the court for any legal case.

This paper is based on a specific scenario of Omega Corporation, where the company's top officials have suspiciously resigned from their positions one after another. The company has been in disbelief, and was also at the same time concerned about the fact that the company's proprietary information has been removed without the consent of the company. This is a serious case of digital crime, and I have been appointed to investigate the matter and present my finds, as an investigation plan, to the company.

Scenario

The case is focused on an aerospace technology company, known as Omega Corporation. The company is involved in designing and manufacturing of the aircraft and satellite components for its clients. The company got a major jolt when the Vice President of Finance announced his resignation from the company, in a bid to join another competing company. This was followed by three other senior managers from the Finance Department had resigned, who were working closely with the ex-VP of Finance Department. The company became quite wary of such exits from its senior management, and decided to set a team to inquire and investigate the matter, and also identify whether the company's proprietary information is being removed without authorization or the exists are just a switching matter.
