Differences among Renaissances

Introduction

This essay is focused on highlighting the main features and the difference of the three renaissances namely Carolingian Renaissance, Macedonian Renaissance and the Islamic Renaissance.

Discussion

Carolingian Renaissances

It is defined as the revival of classical architecture and art in different regions of western and northern Europe that began under Charlemagne till the tenth century (www.thefreedictionary.com). In late 790s, Pope Leo III was in severe difficulty. Papacy's office was considered to be the prize that was to be won in dispute and war that were taking place between the various noble Roman families. These dispute and arguments most of the time had a deep affect on the popes' fortunes.

In 799, a rebellion led by the pope's family's rivals broke out against him. Pope Leo while being in a procession was attacked, beaten and also imprisoned for some time. After escaping from the imprisonment, he took off to Rome and made an appeal to the Charlemagne's court for aid. The group that rebelled the pope brought various criminal charges to Charles that were against the pope. Charles was the arbitrator in between the two parties. No authority in Rome was knowledgeable enough to judge the pope but the King had the status to do so (europeanhistory.boisestate.edu).

Charlemagne himself went to Rome and asked Pope Leo to come back for settling the matter. Council of nobles and prelates was formed by Charles on 23rd December, 800 in which Pope Leo took an oath that affirmed his innocence and the council also forgave his wrongdoing. The finding of council was final and no one could dispute with them.

The Carolingian Renaissance is considered to be a period of cultural and intellectual revival. The idea of stabilized society was stimulated by a group of scholars that had gathered in the court of Charlemagne. The moral betterment which is present in the Carolingian Renaissance is drawn from the models of Roman Empire. In this period, an increase of jurisprudence, writing, literature, liturgical reforms, architecture and arts, and scriptural studies was seen. The impact of this cultural revival was limited to a small number of people. Carolingian Renaissance also applied rational ideas for the first time to the social issues that provided a common writing style and language for communication across Europe (www.princeton.edu).
