CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction

The chronic illnesses needs ongoing attention that usually differs from the encounter based traditional care for the acute illnesses. The most common chronic illness is the Type 2 diabetes, that has a negative health impact and it usually results in an enormous economic burden in the United States and United Kingdom. The purpose of this study is to explore the self management of the older adults suffering from diabetes mellitus Type 2. It will also assess and explore illness management and illness perception of the older adults with the diabetes mellitus. Due to a large ageing population the over whelming burden and there are limited health care resources and high prevalence burden. As a corner stone of the clinical management of the type 2 diabetes self management has been accepted widely (Abbatecola & Paolisso, 2009, pp.35).

Aims and Objectives

To identify how the older people manage diabetes.

To explore the barriers that relates to the behaviours of self management of older people suffering from Type2 diabetes.

To examine and develop the impact of program of the self management on the older adults suffering from type2 diabetes.

To identify the measures that are used both in the existing programs and both in research to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of self management support programs.

Research Question

Can the perceptions and experiences of the self management of diabetes be elucidated that is narrated by the older individuals diagnosed by the Type2 diabetes mellitus?

Can the patient's perceptions be explored regarding barriers that could help to explain the poor health outcomes of the older people suffering from diabetes?

Review of Literature

Introduction

This literature review was conducted in order to establish what is already known about the self management of older people suffering from diabetes Type2 i.e. the benefits of the self management of diabetes, the impact of self management on the adult patients who suffer from diabetes and the effect of the support of self management. Additionally this thesis will add and will help to find the individuals ongoing self management and health decision making that will help increase the family responsibility and patient's responsibility for the delivery of the care of the patients who suffer from diabetes and it will also assist in adapting the care regimens to their own life styles.
