For most organizations, long-term success is the result of innovation and rapid development of new products and secure, reliable, environmentally friendly and competitive. In this context it is vital to understand what aspects of the product or service are important to the customer. Furthermore, between 70% and 80% of operational and quality problems are generated during the design (Xinying, Shuhong, Jie, Jian Guo, Youguang & Zhi Wei, 2008). Therefore, incorporating the voice of the customer and build quality and reliability from the design process are the central concerns of the DFSS approach. The DFSS is a rigorous methodology (IDDOV) to optimize the design process. This methodology consists of five phases (Identify, Define, Develop, Optimize and Verify) and an advanced suite of design tools (which includes the deployment of the quality function, the analysis of failure modes and effects, the analysis functional, experimental design, simulation, statistical optimization and robust design).

If DMAIC focuses on improving existing processes, DFSS (Design For Six Sigma or Design for Six Sigma) focuses on the design of new processes, products and services with 6 sigma performance levels (Mader, 2008). Use statistical and quantitative methods to establish customer requirements and to develop, validate and optimize different designs. DFSS does not replace the process of innovation that the company may have either the development and launch of new products, it complements and enhances (Yi-Chan, Yau-Wen & Chih-Hung, 2008). Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) is a method of quality management for robust, ie error-free products and processes.

Question 1 - Discuss the novel aspects of DFSS considering its advantages and disadvantages within the context of NPI.

DFSS is used for the design or re-design of a product, process or service. The expected process Sigma level for a product or a corresponding DFSS process or service should be at least 4.5 sigma (equivalent to about 1 per mil = 1 error per 1,000 opportunities) amount, but also 6 sigma (3.4 errors per 1 million opportunities) or as required to be even higher (Yun & Chun, 2008). A product or service with such a low error rate requires that the need for critical customer expectations and needs, called CTQs (Critical To Quality), fully understood before a product or service can be completed and implemented.

In contrast to the Six Sigma process-core DMAIC phases or steps for DFSS core processes are not universally recognized or defined, since almost every company or training organization DFSS would define differently. This is partly because a company often introduces DFSS to adapt their business, industry and culture. Sometimes a version of DFSS a consulting firm, established to assist in staffing.
