In this paper I have discussed the patient case for addressing the issues related to the policies based on the treatment of the patient. I have done a critical analysis on the patient's case to highlight the need for policies and procedures. Another important thing that is being talked about in this paper is the role of nursing in providing treatment to the patients who are suffering from a well known deadly disease Diabetes. Still there are many people who are unaware of the symptoms, causes and precautions that need to be taken if an individual is found carrying Diabetes disease.

Introduction

This paper is based on a patient's case who is suffering from Diabetes. The case of the patient was so critical that I wished to include it as a real story for the discussion in my paper. The political and policy making issues and guidelines related to Diabetes has been critically discussed in this paper. Another important thing that is being discussed in this paper is the role of nursing in providing treatment to the patients who are suffering from a well known deadly disease Diabetes. Still there are many people who are unaware of the symptoms, causes and precautions that need to be taken if an individual is found carrying Diabetes disease.

Diabetes Mellitus

A group of metabolic disease in which an individual has high blood sugar either his or her cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced in the body or because the body is not producing enough insulin is commonly known as Diabetes Mellitus or simply Diabetes. Due to the high blood sugar, the conventional symptoms of polydipsia, polyphagia and polyuria are faced by the patients. Polydipsia is a symptom in which an individual faces high thirst, in polyphagia an individual faces increased hunger and in polyuria an individual faces frequent urination.

There are three main kinds of Diabetes mellitus.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Gestational Diabetes

Type 1 DM

In this type of diabetes an individual's body stops producing insulin. Human body cannot survive without insulin therefore it becomes compulsory to inject the required amount insulin or requires wearing an insulin pump.

Type 2 DM

It results from resistance of insulin, in this situation the cells fail to utilize insulin in a proper manner and often it is combined with an absolute insulin deficiency.

Gestational Diabetes

It occurs when a pregnant woman with no previous history of diabetes form a high blood glucose level. It may also convert to Type 2 DM by the time.

All the forms of diabetes are treatable since the introduction of insulin in 1921. Compilations can be faced if proper treatment is not taken (Rooda, 1999). Serious complications include diabetic Ketoacidosis, non-ketotic hyperosmolar coma or hypoglycemia.
