Breech loading black powder weapons were manufactured in one form or another from the 15th century. Early cannon called Veuglaire employed individual breech which was loaded with powder and ball, and then firmly mated barrel driving thick wedge between the frame and the rear breech. Many other forms were tried, including rifles, a revolver-like mechanism (Leonardo da Vinci), Queen Anne's screw gun barrel, the bolt screw Ferguson, and patent rifles Hall. All of these worked, but each had its own particular disadvantage - as a rule, the complexity - so none of them have prospered, while the rifle hall was moderately successful (www.chuckhawks.com).
Evolution of design:
The first goal was to produce arms, what could happen. “I wanted a simple design that could be made at any time in history, whether or not the gun, just as it has ever existed. Because I wanted to maximize accuracy, I need a design with a rigid plane sight and barrel, which eliminated the other screw barrel design. Also, I wanted something a little easier to load. Design of the hall is good, but they tend to be very heavy, and I, as a relatively lightweight guns.
I decided to use a simple lever and crank mechanism to press the shutter back and forth. Picture here (click for more drastic PDF document) shows the barrel is secured to the frame with the boss in the back where the handle is installed. How to load the lever pulled back, the crank rotates and the breech is disconnected from the barrel and swung up, allowing the download. Pushing the lever down drops the breech, and slides forward in the barrel. At the end of stroke, a person contacts the breech end of the barrel, while the remaining 20 degrees of rotation is used to affect a tight fit to squeeze. Adrenaline has a 0.50 "diameter and 3.5" lever assembly provides a mechanical advantage of 80:1. Thus, five pounds of pressure on the loading lever makes at least 400 pounds of closing force on the breech.
But will it stay together? Using a Green Mountain .36 caliber barrel, and assuming the breech pressure of 10000 PSI (probably much higher than it actually is ...), gives retroactive effect of about 1000 pounds, the mechanism must withstand. Receiver frame of milled steel billets from 4140. In the old days it would have been forged, but I'm not a blacksmith, so I opted for my milling machine. Adrenaline and breech were also made from the same steel. Since security considerations always come first, guns were analyzed possible failure modes and their consequences. Weakest link, as such, was cranking the cross-pole, with a diameter of 0.30 ". To avoid this, the breech would simultaneously shift both sides of the PIN-code. Multiplying the total area of ??0.14 sq. shear contact" on the shear strength of hardened 4140 has failed more than ten times the figure expected to back force on the ...
