Abstract

The significant development of information technology and easy access to internet without any legal binding has resulted in the overwhelming emergence of cyber crimes in USA. The Orlando is regarded s the most vulnerable city to cyber crimes in USA because of being rich in technological advancements and economic stability. This research paper is aimed at examining the victimization rate, characteristics of cyber offenders and most recent trends in cyber crimes. The research paper will use mix research method primarily quantitative to analyze the various aspects of cyber crimes in USA. The paper will also review the news articles providing information on typical and unusual cyber crimes committed at Orlando.

Introduction

One of the major threats posed to humanity at the forefront of technological advancements and significant development of internet are the evil practices executed via internet known as “cyber crimes”. With the massive expansion of information technology and its subsequent integration in every discipline posed intense security challenges to its safety mechanisms. Hackers, cyber crimes, viral intrusions and data thefts are few of the major security concerns in the arena of IT these days (Kurtzleben, 2011). The It professionals and researchers have been extensively working to explore the characteristics and backgrounds of cyber offenders but still there are many gray areas to be clarified regarding their origin and progression(BJS, 2011).

Findings

Victimization Rate

The victimization rate of cyber crimes in US has undergone an incredible elevation. According to the report of Federal Bureau of Investigation, about 75 percent of Americans have experienced some sort of cyber crimes in their exposures to internet and online services, while 56 percent have been severely victimized by cyber criminals through malware or hazardous virus (FBI, 2011). The report also revealed that almost 50% of Americans believe that it is almost impossible to reinstate the online reputation once it gets stigmatized (FBI, 2011). The reputation and loss caused by cyber offenses can never be recovered. According to the 2011 report of Norton by StrategyOne and Symantec , the average cost incurred in US on fixing the loss caused by a cyber crime is amounted as $128 with a period of at least one month to execute recovery but 25 % of problems caused by cyber crimes could never be resolved (Norton, 2011). The high victimization rate of cyber crimes in US caused a loss of $32B in the year 2011 and every single victim of cyber crime suffers from a loss of 10 days to tackle the cyber crime which is estimated as causing a loss of $108 billion (Norton, 2011).
