Decreasing uncontrolled hypertension in elderly African Americans

Introduction

Uncontrolled hypertension is a serious life threatening complication that is increasing in our society day by day. The topic for this paper is “Does providing monthly educational information to African Americans and their care givers about hypertension lead to decrease in blood pressure? Various studies have been conducted to know about the effectiveness of hypertensive information in order to reduce the risk of hypertension. There are various reasons for the selection of this topic. One of the most strong reasons for the selection of this topic is regarding the increased incidence of uncontrolled hypertension in the American society (Douglas, 2003). Various studies have described that the population of African Americans are more prominent to the risk of hypertension. They have a higher proportion of facing heart strokes, heart failures, and deaths from heart dieses. Numerous professionals have suggested that awareness of hypertension may decrease the incidence of high blood pressure among African Americans. Various studies have also demonstrated that there are various risk factors and complications associated with the increase blood pressure. It is very necessary to control the risks of hypertension to avoid any further complication. The assessment of complications and risk factors of hypertension is associated with the decreased extent of high blood pressure (Freedman, 2009).

Population for the Study

Elderly African Americans will be selected as the sample of this study. The age group of this population will be 69 to 79 years. The study will select the patients of hypertension to evaluate the effectiveness of awareness programs. Ferdinand & Sounders (2006) conducted a study, which revealed that the elder population of African Americans are more prominent to the risk of increased blood pressure. Moreover, elder African Americans have higher risk of cardiovascular incidents.

Purpose of the Paper

The major purpose of the study is to know about the importance of awareness in reducing the extent of hypertension in African American population. Beyond 40% of the African American population is currently coping with the condition of hypertension, which is associated with life threatening condition (Ferdinand & Sounders, 2006). Making the patients aware of the essential and required information could prevent them from experiencing such dieses. Another major objective of this paper is to provide a clear understanding to the people regarding the prevention of hypertension amongst the African Americans. Moreover, emphasis on the activities and awareness will be associated with the better outcomes of the patient.
