The use of drugs during pregnancy

The problem

The phase of pregnancy is one of the most crucial phases in the life on a female. The problem begins with taking illicit drugs during pregnancy. Every action of a mother affects the life of the baby inside, usually on the long term basis. In the United States, there are approximately 4% of mothers using illicit drugs while conceiving their babies. Drug intake during pregnancy could lead to serious risks to the survival, growth and development of the baby. They cause crucial problems; ranging from the size of the baby to the behavioral problems and birth defects.

Drug intake during conceiving the babies are persistent yet a common and concurrent problem in the society. Regardless of the effects and consequences, young mothers have immense drug intake. Surveys have shown that mothers who take drugs are mostly indifferent about their effects upon the child and put the life of the baby at serious risk. drug intake renders severe harm to the fetus, whereas, hinders the development of the baby. It is one of the most adverse situations for a baby to have his mother taking drugs while conceiving, since they reach directly to the baby through the fetus (CE prn, 4-8).

The effects of drugs

The intake of illicit drugs pertains to intake of marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, heroin, and other amphetamines, whereas, the licit drugs pertains to all the medications prescribed by the doctor or healthcare consultant. Research shows that 90% of the mothers who use drugs during pregnancy give birth to babies with severe developmental problems. The rationale behind the drug effects is quite coherent and clear, that is, everything taken by the mother is taken by the baby through fetus.
