Introduction

Rape is one of the important issues that have been debated on for so many years by several socialists, governments, different institutions and people. Rape can be defined as the assault by a person involving sexual contact with another person without that person's consent. There are many types of rapes but the most common type of rape among teens is date rape (Olshen , 2007). Whenever we hear the word rape immediately an image of stranger pops up into our mind but this is not true. Teens are also raped by the people they know. In this paper, we are going to analyze one of the important social issues: Date Rape. We shall start with brief introduction continue with discussion of some facts and will end with effective recommendations. The purpose of this paper is to let readers know about the prevalence of date rape so that appropriate actions could be taken.

Discussion

Defining date rape is a complicated exercise as different definitions abound in legal, media, academic, and political discourses. Date rape is a type of rape of a person by someone who is well known by the person. The key characteristic of fate rape is that, the person being raped doesn't show any consent for the act. Date rape is subset of acquaintance rape (Walsh, 2010). Date rape is not an incident which only happens in isolated situations. According to department of Justice, in United States of America 28% of date rapes involve close people such as boyfriends and husbands while 38% of people are raped by acquaintances. However, the surprising thing is that most cases of date rape are not reported. Women are the majority victims of date rape but with the passage of time, the situation is changing. Men are also being raped by women and other men.

According to the statistical analysis of U.S Justice Department, in U.S. in every two minutes women are raped and according to the victims they knew the rapists. In a survey, 84% women reported that they knew the attackers, 57% rapes where date rapes. There were 42% women who did not tell anyone about the incident. Women aging between 14-17 were raped. 55% women and 75% men were involved in date rape because of drinking or taking drugs. In a survey of males 33% men said that they would commit rape if they could escape from the detection of punishment. 84% of male students who commit date rape clearly met legal definition of rape. The majority of rapes occur in living quarters--60% in victim's residence, 10 % in a fraternity, and 31 % in other living quarters. Off campus victimizations also took place in bars, dance clubs and work settings (Dunn, 1999).
