Database quality

A high-quality database denotes an inclusive electronic product which signifies a user's abstract or intangible world. There are several elements engaged in the delivery of quality database however such elements are not standardized. The quality criterion has been classified into ten parameters which are listed below;

Value-to-cost ratio;

Customer support and training;

Documentation;

Output;

Integration;

Accessibility;

Accuracy;

Timeliness;

Scope; and

Consistency

Researches regarding the scientific databases yielded varying inferences; they marked out relevance, comprehensiveness and reliability as essential criteria for the measurement of quality of a database. Another research imparted a supplementary factor in the assessment of quality that is data quality. Data quality is a significant factor of the entire physical model however one must not confuse it with database quality for the reason that data quality is just one dimension of database quality, a database may only comprise of high quality data however it may yet experience transactional or security issues (Wang & Strong, 2006, pp. 5-34). The measurements of data quality, in terms of databases, may be abridged as in five aspects;

Completeness;

Currency;

Normalized;

Accuracy; and

Relevance

Data is considered to be of high quality in case it is suitable for its intended purposes in planning, decision making and operations. As the database technology developed and the complicated online systems and sophisticated GUIs emerged, there is a requirement for novel modeling systems. A high quality database must attend to such aspects together with the ones afore mentioned. In the year 2003, Hoxmeier proposed four classifications of dimensions for the investigation of the quality of database, which include;

Behavior;

Semantic;

Data; and

Process

This model may effectively examine any possible susceptibility which may result in poor quality. Only data and process measures were traditionally considered.

Database quality dimensions (from Hoxmeier (2003))

Database Process Quality

Database process quality denotes the procedure to design and implement the database system which is intensively extracted out from the requirements of the user. The database process may additionally be construed as “designing it right”. The quality of database process is of much significance in the production of a high quality database (Te'eni, 2003, pp. 30-38).

Database Data Quality

For the order of making the data useful, the data requires being;

Trustworthy;

Complete;

Correct;

Valid;

Reliable; and

Accurate

A database is of use only when it has quality data contained in it. Data may cause a number of issues, counting in the generation of ineffective decisions.

Database Semantics Quality

Semantics point to varying connotations in varying disciplines. In the discipline of computer science, it imparts the regulations for the interpretation of the syntax that does not directly impart the meaning rather limits the probable construes of what is stated. Semantics, in databases denote a conceptual data model which imparts semantic information regarding the entities and facilitates the mediators in interpreting and understanding the way it relates to the practical world (Silberscharz, 2007, pp. 15-21).

Database Behavioral Quality

Database behavioral quality denotes the way a database rejoinders to the demands, concurrency and the convenience of use. Several databases are thought of as of low quality just for the reason that they have a complicated structure and they are not so easy to ...
