DATA WAREHOUSES

Security, Personalization and Privacy in Data Warehouses

ABSTRACT

Data warehousing is any organization's most precious asset. Every organization that possesses data has concerns regarding its safety and privacy; organizations want the critical data to be saved from getting attacked by the malicious outside and inside attackers. Since, the nature of data queries and data saved is in a huge volume the security measures taken for data protection are not adequate. The security systems that are currently positioned for data protection consume too many resources, increase the response time of query and at the time might also generate false alarm. This paper will highlight issues regarding to date warehousing security, privacy and personalization. It will also shed light on specific problems and criteria to be met for effective data warehousing. This paper will prove useful for future researches as it will point out the challenges and opportunities associated with this topic.

Security, Personalization and Privacy in Data Warehouses

Chapter No 1: Introduction

Statement of the Problem

A data warehouse is a collection of data in which information is integrated in the institution and used as support for the process of making management decisions. While various organizations and individuals fail to understand the focus of a Warehouse, experience has shown that there are many potential benefits. Gathering the appropriate data elements, from various sources in a comprehensive application centralized, simplifies the problem of access to information and thus speeds up the process of analysis, consultation and less time to use the information. Applications for decision support based on a data warehousing can be made more practical and easier for greater business efficiency, which is not achieved when using only data coming from operational applications (which help in the operation of the company in its daily operations), in which information is collected by separate processes and often complex. The security problem associated with data warehouses is to ensure that system resources are, under all circumstances, used for its intended purpose. For that protection mechanisms are used. Operating systems provide some protection mechanisms to implement policies security. The paper will discuss security, personalization and privacy issues related to Data warehouses.

Significance of the Problem

Since the beginning of the computer era, organizations have used data from operational systems to meet their information needs. Some provide direct access to the information contained within operational applications. Others have extracted the data from their operational databases to be combined in various ways unstructured, in an attempt to meet users' information needs. Both methods have evolved over time and now manage an organization's inconsistent data, on which, in most of the time, important decisions are made. Traditionally, one of the biggest challenges in the protection of stored data has been tracking storage ...
