Characteristics of a good research hypothesis

A good research hypothesis may have the following characteristics.

The hypothesis should be based on some observation.

The hypothesis must offer a solution to the problem.

The hypothesis should be articulated in a way that it can easily be checked and verified.

The hypothesis should be cost efficient, practical and far-seeing.

The hypothesis should surely have relation with the theory and the facts, and it must find the accuracy of those theory and facts.

The hypothesis should have something rational.

The hypothesis should reflect the actual theory like a mirror.

The hypothesis should not be debatable and self-dependable (Khan J. 2011).

Null Hypothesis vs. Research Hypothesis

A research hypothesis is the type of statistical hypothesis based on a theory and formulated on the difference of the data observed and examined while the null hypothesis is another type of statistical hypothesis that always does predicts that there is no difference between the sets of data under observation and examination (Jackson S. L. 2009).

Difference between Directional and Non-Directional Research Hypothesis

The difference between the directional and non-directional research hypothesis is that the directional hypothesis defines or predicts the result in comparisons style like “one is smaller than two” or simply the directional hypothesis not only predicts the difference between the two groups of the data but also predicts its nature. On the other hand, the non-directional hypothesis only predicts the presence of the difference between the two groups of the hypothesis (Marczyk G. R. et.al 2005).

Steps in Data Collection Process

There are five main steps in data collection process.

Identification of different issues and opportunities for the data collection.

Setting of the goals and objectives while selecting the issue and opportunities.

Planning of the collection methods.

What type of data is required i.e. nature of data.

From where the data is required i.e. the geographical location.

How data is collected i.e. qualitative or quantitative.

By which mean the data should be collected i.e. survey, observation, interviews, database etc.

Collection of data.

Analysis of the data collected (ORCH n.d).

Importance of Being Systematic in Data Collection

The systematic data collection is necessary in the research since without being following the actual data collection path, it is hard enough to get the right and actual data needed in the research. If someone did not go through the systematic way of data collection in the research, he can face problems from the very beginning. For example, the first step of data collection is to identify the nature of data, if the researcher misses the first step and goes directly on the second step, data selection method, he cannot select the most suitable data collection method for his research since he does not know what type of data has to collect? Similarly, the researcher cannot compile and arrange the data before it is being collected.
