Introduction

In United States, youth suicide is the most significant health concern despite the decline in the suicide rates up to approximately 29%; according to the research. However, an upward trend was identified in the age group of 10-19 years. There were various factors which forces the youngsters to commit suicide such as peer harassment, experience with bullying etc. all these factors result in hopelessness, depressions; and thus resulting in creation of negative behavior, and suicidal thoughts.

Objective

This article by Hinduja & Patchin (2010) explores a child's proneness to cyber bullying. The main objective of this assignment is to extract and analyze those two predictors of suicide cause by cyber bullying; “Offending” and “Victimization”. It is most evident that somewhere, sometime in his life, a family-member must have been a 'victim' or an 'offender' of cyber bullying. Also would a child engage in such activity, if he knows that his parents are not unsympathetic about cyber bullying; summary of which contains key-points, claims and learning from the article (Hinduja & Patchin, 2010) followed by the basis on which the authors made their claim.

Main Points

The authors support their stance by projecting results from earlier studies; and mark relevant points in figures. They spotted that the greater quantity of youth is influenced by everybody who surround them, which include educators, parents, peers and other respected and valued adults. Adults play a very important role in the development of a child. In has been seen that during earlier eras, children used to look for sympathy and approval from their adults (Dishion et al. 1991). As they age, they learn to socialize and assess the value of behavioral norms and standards under their adults' supervision. At adolescence, his priorities and attitude changes, waging him to follow his society instead of his frequent elders (Warr, 1993). The role of parents and educators again comes into play during this stage. These adults compel adolescents to behave in a pro-social and positive way as to stop the adolescent from going astray. Any inefficiency or failure train and monitor the youth will increase the power of the delinquent and deviant peer. So if there is an appropriate level of communication between the child and his peers, there are fewer chances of the child adopting bad behaviors (Warr, 2002).

Apparently, this article examines some claims through a research conducted by taking a sample of 2000 middle-schoolers selected randomly.
