Introduction

Specialists in human service should be an expert in different cultures. The awareness of different culture enables one to be efficient in knowing how the various cultures think and will react thus making the delivery of the service appropriate (Morrison, 2005). This understanding will help the human service professionals to deliver customized service that is in accordance to the diverse behavior, beliefs and values.

The Color Purple is an exceptionally well written book by Alice Walker in 1982. Later the script was used to make a film of it. The story is a true depiction of lacking in culturally diverse competency, where the main character Celie, faces many difficulties in life. This paper will highlight the delivery of culturally competent service to Celie and her husband, Mr. Albert Johnsons. It will also underline the cultural component strategies and addressing the issues.

Discussion

Alice Walker addresses issues such as domestic violence, sexual abuse and other assaults. Celie, an African American was tortured, abused and raped by her stepfather bearing two children of him. Stepfather gave away the children after birth. Later she was married to Albert Johnson, to take care of his children and help with his farm. Her married life was as abusive. Shug Avery, mistress of Albert becomes friend with Celie as she notices how she is being treated (Walker, 2011). This friendship makes Celie grow emotionally and enables her to gain independence while helping with Albert's treatment. The paper will further discuss culturally competent services and strategies that could have assisted Celia and her husband with their married life.
