Abstract

This research paper is based on critique of the movie "GRAPES OF WRATH". The movie has highlighted various issues that were faced by the farmers and living in “The Old Bowl” a place in United States of America. The issues were based on social, political and historical themes and the director John Ford has been quite successful in depicting all these issues in an effective way. The movie has shown time of Great Depression of 1930s in a tragic and colorful way. The movie was highly acclaimed and therefore it received two Academy Awards, five Academy Awards nominations and various prestigious recognitions from the film industry.

The movie “Grapes of Wrath” was a motion picture that depicted the difficulties that Joads faced while searching for opportunities and work for his family members.

Introduction

The Grapes of Wrath is a black and white classic drama film that was directed by the Director John Ford. The story of this movie was based on prize winning novel of John Steinbeck's Pulitzer that was also having the same name “Grapes of Wrath”. The executive producer of this movie was Darryl F. Zanuck and its Screenplay was written by Nunnally Johnson.

The story of this movie is based on difficulties that were faced by people during the time of Great Depression of 1930s. Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) was one of the main characters in this movie, who belonged to an Oklahoma family. This movie was nominated as one of the best movie that was selected for conservation in the U.S.N.F.R (United States National Film Registry) due to its historical and cultural significance. The film has shown the difficulties that were faced by the farmers of Oklahoma during the era of Great Depression (1930). John Ford has combined the main social problems that were faced by the people in Great Depression era and created this movie struggle for human dignity and family survival. He has also depicted patriotism of people towards their country as many farmers lost their farms in this era.

“The Dust Bowl” was a limited area in United States of America on which this movie is based and this name was given to this area as this area does not get any rain. Due to drought and poverty farmers of this area were deprived of growing crops. Due to the harsh weather in that area many farmers left that place with their families in search of better place where they can survive.
