Critique of a Research Report

Introduction

This paper is an academic critique of a quantitative research article written by Machira, G. Kariuki, H. & Martindale, L. (2013) titled “Impact of an educational pain management program on nurses' pain knowledge and attitudes in Kenya.” As a critique, I will suggests that the aim, objective, methods, results and the conclusion are clearly identified in the abstract of the research, but the recommendations are missing from the abstract of the study as they had implemented a pain management program, but they should suggests that usefulness of the program in actual nursing practice or they should provide observations regarding the effectiveness of the program in actual nursing practice. Overall this critique research report is highlighting the strengths and limitations of this piece of research as to verify its reliability to actual nursing practice setting.

This research study focuses on the “Impact of an educational pain management program on nurses' pain knowledge and attitudes in Kenya.” The nursing knowledge and attitudes were evaluated regarding pain management in patients in Kenya. It was examined that knowledge regarding pain management plays an effective role in patient care as knowledge of the pain management leads to minimize pain severity in a patient that are suffering from chronic diseases and illnesses (Machira, 2013). The programme that was initiated for the awareness of nursing faculty was successful, but it practical implications are missing from this study. As to adopt this program intervention in the field of nursing is the major missing element in this study. Besides this issue, the sample should represents the population as quantiaitive research should include large number of sample that is not incorporated in this research paper (fox, 2009).

Problem and problem statement

The problem is highlighted in this study as an author has presented a statement than a question. In this regard, the pain management program will be effective for nurses this is a statement rather than a question. The research carried out when there is a question in the mind of an author. The author should have identified a question in this research that the pain management program should have either positive or negative impact on actual practice of nurse so this could be the question that could be incorporated as a problem of this study (Rond, 2001).

Moreover, this research study should be directional as in the light of previous researches the studies proposed that there is lack of knowledge of nurses regarding pain management and another study suggests that the direction that pain management program positive impact on nurses. The previous research that is depicted in this article is focused on a particular direction either the pain management program have positive or negative impact on the nurses. So the research study should be directional as to validate previous researches.
