Introduction

The paper will look to critically analyse an article which was published in The Independent about the cabinet ministers coming up with incorrect statements that the riots in various cities of Britain were the handiwork of criminal gangs. Based on a thorough research carried out by the government, the majority of youngsters who were responsible for looting and rioting belonged to poor families and neighbourhoods. They mostly belonged to homes that were destitute and poor, creating innumerable problems for the government and the people at the helm of affairs. Government representatives perhaps tried to divert the attention of the public from the pressing problem of poverty amongst youth from not-so-well-to-do backgrounds, and tried to lay the blame squarely on the shoulders of the criminal gangs in London and other cities in England. Thus, in order to hide behind the real problems and addressing them in a proper way to eliminate the root causes of looting and rioting, top government representatives and cabinet ministers laid the blame of the troubles in the country on criminal gangs. By carrying out a critical analysis of this article, this paper will shed light on the causes of rioting, and will look to suggest ways through which the government could eliminate the root causes of the violence, which sadly claimed the lives of innocent people, in addition to causing injuries and loss of property to many people in the country.

Based on the research of the Justice Ministry and Home Office, the majority of youth involved in rioting and looting came from poor backgrounds, with deprivation cited as the root to the chilling acts of looting carried out by them. In addition, the youngsters lacked proper education, thus leaving them unemployed and incapable to meet ends meet. On the basis of the statistics obtained from the research carried out, a staggering percentage of the youngsters who took part in looting and rioting were based in the poorest districts and neighbourhoods of the country, underlining the fact that growing poverty has driven a large percentage of unemployed and insufficiently educated youngsters to resort to violence, looting and rioting. The government was aware of this growing problem since long, but no appropriate measures or steps were taken to deal with this issue which has grown into a ...
