The experience of ambiguous loss in families of brain injured ICU patients (A Critical Review)

The experience of ambiguous loss in families of Brain Injured ICU patients

Introduction

The evidence based practice is a process to apply the existing findings of any research study that is practical when any research strategy is selected. It is a best health care approach as the researcher needs to prove that by employing this practice an individual is capable of getting the best care possible (Melnyk & Overholt, 2010, pp. 599). The significance of the Evidence based practice in nursing is that it integrates the best evidence for the research with existing resources into decision making so that the individual patient's health care can be maintained, as well as clinical expertise and patient preferences can be best practiced (DiCenso, Cullum & Ciliska , 1998, pp. 38). This paper aims to conduct a critical review of a qualitative study the experiences of ambiguous loss in families of brain injured ICU patients. This article has been extracted from The British Journal of Nursing in critical care. This journal publishes innovative studies that enrich the understanding of the evidence based practice in nursing. It is well known and is responsible to provide insights to reach a wide enough audience.

The Traumatic brain injury is considered to be a growing public health concern. It is thought to be a major disability and mortality cause among the younger individuals and the global TBI incidences are sharply rising because of increasing use of motor vehicle in middle and lower income countries. Many individuals are not aware of the magnitude of the problems related to the Traumatic brain injury. The individuals do not perceive this injury as a preventable public health care concern. Because of the lack of awareness, its circumstances and risk factors leading toward Traumatic brain injury considering being an unpredictable, tragic accident that incorrectly perpetuates the idea that such injury are inevitable and unavoidable.

Very little is known about the experiences of the family members of critically ill patients. The progresses in the medical technology for the critically ill patients, have led to an enhanced rates of survival that results in the patient's survival having solemn Traumatic Brain Injury. Such patients usually undergo the enduring damage to the brain that leads to the ambiguous loss in family. Therefore, this overall study aimed at exploring the experiences of a member in family having critical illness in the intensive care and the perception of nurses in families. The aim of any specific study is the heart of any research study(Kean, 2010, pp. 66). The aim shall be concisely stated, logically structured, and robust. The job title and authors qualification in this article can be a useful indicator of the knowledge of research area which is under investigation (Conkin, 2005, pp.183). The author of this study has the relevant academic qualification possessing sufficient skills and knowledge to conduct the study.
