Critical awareness of surgical procedures and their relationship to histopathology specimens

Histopathology refers to the microscopic examination of tissue to study the manifestations of the disease. As cancer medicine hopes a new era of molecularly defined subtypes of cancer and targeted therapies, however, the role and the surgeon and the pathologist develops increasingly require professional attention to the surgical resection of the specimen. It is surgically resection of tissue, which has the molecular information needed to identify the specific molecular characteristics of cancer patients whose tumor specific therapy would be expected to respond, and even the specific risks of adverse reactions to this therapy is predicted by the patient's genetic structure. This molecular information underlies the "personalized" approach provided for cancer patients under the age of molecular medicine. Professional responsibility to assure that the molecular composition of the samples and the integrity of the protected share as a surgeon and a pathologist. The current momentum in the direction of Molecular Medicine, quickly lifting of the professional responsibility to one of the most important aspects of cancer care.

At present, however, preserve the molecular integrity or surgical documentation of the variables that influence the molecular composition of the samples resection is not widely considered to be major aspects of the professional responsibility of a physician. Manipulation of tissue in the surgical procedure itself can have dramatic effects on the molecular composition of that tissue. However, these manipulations are neither recorded nor controlled when and where this is possible. Variables such as type and duration of anesthesia, medications before surgery and during surgery, and devascularization / ischemia time for the tissue removed can dramatically change the molecular profiles and / or molecular integrity. After successful resection, the specimen may spend different ...
