Critical Analysis of the article: Group Therapy Techniques for Sexually Abused Preteen Girls by Berman
Introduction
The article Group therapy techniques for sexually abused preteen girls by Berman, P. (1990), presents an open-ended, highly intensive and structure therapy group for abused and sexually harmed preteen girls that was the primary mode of treatment for around 11 girls from low income, white families, multi problem and rural development. Berman (1990) has highlighted in his studies that Child Protective Service workers played an important role in sustaining the girls in treatment for strong parental opposition. Thus, the article examines some unique features of the selected group including simultaneous individualized and group goals. The present study checks the subject matter of sexual abuse in the infancy, emphasizing the diverse contributions realized by different professionals. It is not uncommon mothers and adolescents who have been sexually abused, belonging to the lower classes of society, to give greater value to the loss of virginity than the violent experience. Thus, the anthropological analysis performed to a wider social understanding of sexual abuse on the part of health professionals who will be faced with these cases. It is noteworthy that this reading should not replace or overshadow the need to seek the meaning assigned individual, families, suffered such violence. Sexual violence among girls is one of the cruelest forms of violation of the right to dignity, respect and freedom of adolescent.
Study indicated that the effectiveness of the group therapy is one of the most important mechanisms of therapeutic action which is the appearance and the patient's experience in the group of those emotional situations.
