Management Perspectives
In its 2008 Sustainability Report, Keycom defines telecommunications as an environmentally sound technology that is cleaner than many traditional industries. The goal, as defined by Keycom's strategic mission, is “to manage our business to minimize negative impacts to the environment and to maximize the benefits we bring.” In order to fulfill this objective, Keycom relies on an environmental management system that complies with the international standard ISO 14001 of 2004 as a mean to reduce environmental impact. UK operations are certified according to this standard since 1999. With this general purpose in mind, the company has identified the following risk areas: fuel, energy and water, waste, transport, emissions to air, procurement and the environment, product stewardship, and local environmental impacts.
According to Keycom's official statements, the company is particularly concerned with the production of carbon dioxide due to the significant amounts of energy used to power the telecommunications network and energy needed to run and cool the buildings. In order to reduce this production of greenhouse gases, the Keycom Group has established a target of reducing its carbon emission intensity by 80 percent against 1996-1997 levels by December 2020. The group continuously improves its energy efficiency, buys green electricity whenever possible, and installs on-site renewable technologies. As an example of this corporate policy, Keycom signed in 2004 what was the largest renewable energy purchase deal at the time. The company has also set up a computer-based energy consumption monitoring system in order to control consumption and possible misuse of energy.
