Introduction

In the modern age of globalization, media has succeeded in establishing itself as an opinion builder that holds the power to change the world scenery without doing much. It enjoys a position as necessary as food and shelter in an individual's life. Considered the tool for mirroring the modern world, it has attained a position where it is able to shape opinions and thoughts. Although its core purpose is to provide information and entertainment, but it also work as an educating agent in many ways. Today people have access to the entire world. The Global information is now just a click of remote away.

Media has been the important player in world's politics, which has the power and resources to make an unknown popular and vice versa. It has played a significant role in the overall world politics (Marrone, G. 2010. Pp, 4-8 ). If talk about Sicily it is the key player which educated the world and the population of what the Mafia in the island has been up to. Setting a centre stage for Sicily on the Global platform, it trimmed and shaped the public opinion in a way it wanted to as described in (Sabetti, F. 2002. p, 40-52).

The purpose of this paper is to analyze critically, the role media plays in projecting the Mafia in Sicily, viewing the origin and present standing of Mafia in the island and the media's role in its projection.

Mafia in Sicily

Sicily has a history of being subjected to the vengeance of many criminal syndicates. Its relationships with the different Mafia's have been varied and diversified in nature which affected the populations and the government machineries in its own way. Although its roots dates back to the Roman Empire, but the Mafia still stems in the system and its practices. It gained acceptance and took a hold on the major institutions of the island in the 19th century (Marrone, G. 2010. Pp, 4-8). Today it is that more than 29 mafia clans are still operating in Sicily. The beautiful island has always been the desired location for traders. It was considered as the best possible location for colonization which continues to be an entrance to the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Adriatic as it is described in (Sardell, J. 2009. p, 55-62, 100).

Sicily's vicious and tyrannical government history the countless stories of cruel practices of the corrupt rulers (as far as the judicial system is) cultivated an environment of autonomy among the populace fostering hatred for the rulers (Santino, U.n.d, p.n.d). This self-reliance and reverence was nurtured by fear, violence and threats to the common man from the government's functionaries, which led the common men rise in opposition for the ruling authority.
