Domestic violence has its roots in patriarchy and the sexist attitude that women are objects to be controlled. We need to do whatever we can to change these attitudes. Do something outright, such as volunteering at a local battered women's shelter, or something more subtle, such as correcting a person who says or does something that promotes hatred of women. Our careers as social workers and health care professionals will be much more rewarding if we can really change someone's life (Cawood, 2003, 13).
