Introduction

The museum's "Crime and punishment" (Crime and Punishment) was inaugurated May 25, 2008 in Washington. It contains 400 objects trace the history of U.S. criminal and is also intended to reflect the reality of the death penalty in the country. The message of the museum: Crime does not pay and that there are consequences to his actions (Kappeler, 2011). It is a carefully orchestrated program. It is U.S. fascination with crime and the law. Students should visit Washington DC National Crime and Punishment Museum because it is good place for understanding the Policing in American society and how Police work for society?

Policing in American Society

Unlike most countries, the U.S. is not a single police department, therefore, no official dealer of the term "Police United States." Instead, each state, as well - every major city, and sometimes a smaller town has its own police department, independent from the others. Their own police departments can be assured with large transport companies (roxburysbc.edu, 2012).

Structure of Policing in American Society

American police has divided into two levels:

1.Federal Level

2.State Level

Federal Level

In Federal level included organizations such as: Federal Bureau Of investigations, customer enforcement, Drug Enforcement Administration, Immigration etc.These organizations have authority from the Article 1 section 8 of the Constitution of the America and it ensure Congress power for regulating taxes and interest commerce. The big example is FBI follow the criminal which are cross state and beyond the boundaries of country.

State Level

The State Level is further divided into three levels:

State trooper

It is also known as Sate Police and Highway Patrol. They have authority to control the entire state but mainly they control those areas which are maintained and operated by state level agencies such as the highways and state government buildings.

County Sheriffs

County Sheriffs is the responsibility of County Sheriff is maintain the country jails and Patrol unincorporated areas.

City/Local police

City/Local police serve cities and patrol within City limits.

In the U.S. there are federal law enforcement agencies that investigate federal crimes ( FBI , Office of Drug Enforcement , federal marshals and others).

But the main burden falls on the police states and cities. Head of the local police authority - Commissioner, Superintendent or chief of police .It is usually appointed mayor, the mayor or local legislative body, and sometimes chosen by popular vote.

At the level of the district head of police department is usually called the “sheriff.” Marshalls is almost universally chosen for this position and have the right to appoint a replacement. The administration of the sheriff and the district is engaged in the content of the prison and courtroom security.

Powers of the Police

U.S. law, police powers as defined by law, passed by the state or local government for the implementation of the legal regulation of civil interests, protect the safety, health, and all that concerns the citizens, as well as for preventive action in respect of criminal offenses, mass demonstrations and riots associated with the them.
