I was sitting on the cold, wet floor in a dingy cellar. The wetness of the floor sent a chill down my spine. I wanted to shudder but I could not, too traumatized by the experience of the last few hours. My eyes were still adjusting to the bleakness of the dingy room. As my eyes accustomed themselves with the darkness of the room, I looked around breathing deeply. The dense air of the room was filled with the pungent stench of cold rusty metal. I felt nauseous as I drew in the cold dense air.

My hands were numb clutching my legs which were bent under me for so long. My feet hurt from the unnatural angle they were resting in. My neck was stiff for being erect for so long. My head felt heavy and the vision before me blurred consistently. I was sure that I was on the verge of losing it. Maybe I would not survive this terrible ordeal; maybe it was too much for me to endure. Maybe I was destined to meet such a terrible end because I had chosen this path myself. Now that I thought about it, I realized that I was responsible for shaping the circumstances in the way they were now.

A sob escaped my lips as a strong urge to cry built within my broken heart. I could make out the old walls of the room now. It seemed that they were closing in on me… suffocating me… strangling me. I tried to shift my legs under me, shifting back against the wall, the numbness becoming unbearable. Bending my legs, I clutched them close to my chest and hugged them. I stared straight ahead at the heavy metal door that refused me a free life. Imprisoned in this cell, I wanted scream and call out for help but I knew it was of no use. No one could hear me. All I had were memories and mental images of the chain of events that had led me down the path to this terrible fate. I had all the time available to me to reflect on the error of my ways.

It all started on that eventful day when the years we spent researching stem cell technology finally paid off. The two of us had finally perfected two promising applications of the technology - cell regeneration and cell manipulation. Cell regeneration allowed us to regenerate the cells of an impaired human subject, helping them to re-grow an entire forearm or a leg within a week. On the other hand, cell manipulation allowed us to restructure the genetic code of a human subject. This way, we could make them smarter, stronger, faster, and healthier. We had perfected the technology by testing it on 1,256 human subjects and our success rate was an overwhelming 87%.

Our discovery was a breakthrough in the field of science and it would have won us many awards and accolades. With the power of stem cell technology in the ...
