A Portfolio of Creative Writing

Introduction

The aim of this assignment is to develop the four pieces of creative writing based on different topics. I believe that most of the contemporary and historical writing is creative. When we consider the works of ancient philosophers, we find that they engaged in only creative writing that fulfilled the demands of their readers and the audience. Hence, the creativity of Shakespeare shows in his comic works as well as in his tragedy when he decides to kill both of the hero and heroine of his play in Romeo and Juliet. It is the creativity of the author that suggests the use of a twist in the story, resulting in the death of first Juliet and then of Romeo. Creative writing is also done by those who write both fact and fiction. When using creativity in writing about the facts, the writers depict the situations in new ways previously unknown to the readers. However, at the same time it is another fact that such creative writing addresses the problems and issues that exist in the society. Most of the contemporary writing is confined to much localized milieus in which the social ills of the community or the society are highlighted. Then, such writing has multiple purposes of informing, describing, entertaining, and also correcting the social issues at hand. Then, such writing is thematic mostly and addresses the social ills in the society.

The four pieces of literature and creative writing included in this portfolio also contain important depictions of the societies in which these have been written. The first is a descriptive passage on the poem of Iliad and shows how war was defined in that poem. It also tells about that community and how it dealt with confrontation and conflict. The second piece of writing is a travelogue that depicts the writer's journey to New York City. It also tells about the community of that city and addresses the need of the audience to realize the beauty of exotic places. The third piece of writing is a dialogue between a teacher and a student. The student is asking the teacher to provide him with a letter of recommendation for admission. Here, both the play of gender and race is shown where the teacher finally agrees to provide the student with the sought recommendation. Finally, the fourth piece of writing will present a short story which is both fact and fiction. This story shows the acceptance of the supernatural in the society and narrates the story of a young man who encountered a witch one night.

Item 1: The Depiction of War in Homer's Iliad

Homer has depicted the war very richly in his long poem Iliad. I observed that this poem has about two books that are wholly devoted to the depiction ...
