Story
It is the spirit of Christmas that stays with me, a spirit that was strong and powerful and created the first tingling sensations of a time so special. This spirit was all we had, but it was all we needed to get us focused on Christmas. Short December days, farm work at its lowest ebb meant that rural households, mid-way through the last century, were places of busy family life though the families were largely in charge of their own destiny.
It was the aroma of the Christmas cake baking that triggered the anticipations and excitement. This was it!! 'Santy' and happy times for enjoyment. In the following few days a plum pudding would be boiled away for hours on the old 'Stanley' range. Any misdemeanours we committed would be met with a sharp rebuke and dire warnings that if Santy got to hear about this ....! Best behaviour followed for several days. As the great time drew closer, Christmas and its significance would be talked about for short periods by the fireside at night.
Those of us who were in school were encouraged by our teacher to begin our recitations So the story begins as there was once a man who didn't believe in God and didn't hesitate to let others know how he felt about religion and religious holidays, like Christmas. His wife did believe and raised their children to have faith in God and Jesus.
