The Nation-State, Globalization and Capitalism

Q1. How does 'the sociological imagination' help make sense of globalization?

The term sociological imagination was coined for the first time by Wright Mills who discussed that human beings are not knowledgeable about the powers that form the world's history; however, with the passage of time, they acquire knowledge about fitting in various world events and participating in transformation of history. Sometimes, individuals lack knowledge to relate to the fast transforming world and consider themselves incapable in comparison to the powers (Fuller, 2006, p. 25). In such a situation, they are required to understand and take in all the accessible knowledge so that they can relate to the social transformations around them. Self realisation of an individual is linked to fundamental changes in order to understand oneself. Sociological imagination allows one to comprehend their specialised functions in society and their self understanding. Fuller (2006) informs that troubles and issues are interlinked to one another (p. 47).

Globalisation is interlinked with economic advancement, education and corporate sector. Giddens (2011) informs that human beings focus their attention towards advancement of globalised acquirement in terms of aims and objectives related to international projects (p. 37). The problems related to export, communication technology, mechanical technology, all are associated to globalisation (Giddens, 2011, p. 39). Socialisation and globalisation are correlated. Globalisation affects nation state and according to Giddens (2011), free trade system should be criticised globally (p. 60). Globalised economic network and information network are advancing continuously and people are not paying attention to the transformations that are taking place along with globalisation. According to Giddens (2011), globalisation can be described as extensiveness of social linkages in the world. Global economic systems are interconnected with administrations, technological development and human traditions. Giddens (2011) does not emphasises on the role of globalisation as wholly linked to economy but many other aspects such as political assimilation, free trade, economical stabilisation, growth, free markets, technological developments, cultures and many related aspects (p. 69). The world is going to grow in terms of improvement of trade and communication.

Sociological imagination can be better comprehended with its relation to globalisation. Sociological imagination allows people to know about their past, present and future in the world. Sociological imagination also accommodates people to know about the problems that they have to endure in their lives along with the causes of occurrence of these problems.
