Abstract

Correctional administrators and leaders perform one of the most challenging jobs. These administrators are at the same time working in the management team for prisons and also as trainers. As part of management team their work includes looking after day to day operations of the prison and as trainers they have to train the prisoners and the workers at prisons. They have to train them in such a way that can add value to the life of the prisoners and when they get out of jail they can become a positive part of the society. If the prisoners are not handled and trained properly, these prisoners can become a destructive medium too. While performing their duties, the correctional administrators and leaders have to create a culture of help and learning also. This culture helps the administrators to perform their duties effectively.

Introduction

Correctional administrators and leaders are playing a vital role to make our society a better place to live. These leaders help the prisoners to become good citizens. While the correctional administrators, as it can be understood by the name help to correct the bad habits of the prisoners and also support the administrative department to provide prisoners with a culture and environment that can support the learning and correction process of prisoners (Curie, 1985). Correctional administrators not only train the prisoners to become good citizens, but they also help the management team. These administrators look at the day to day activities of the prisons. These include operations, looking at the matters of prison security, employment, logistics, accounting and finance. The administrators are also the reviewer of procedures and policies, and their effectiveness with respect to the feedback received. They not only plan training but also provide counseling services to the prisoners. This job requires experience of years and in addition to this the administrator is also required relevant education to administer properly (Richard, 2011). The requirement for correctional leaders and administrator is due to changing is the culture of this world. These leaders and administrators help the people to grow and facilitate them to become more efficient and productive citizen. If there is some kind of problem in educating these inmates, major problem can arise such as increase in crime rates (Richard, 2011).

Background

The need for a correctional administration department, which will abide by the correctional law, was established more than 125 years ago. It was established due to violence and misconducts with the prisoners. Prisoners were not treated as humans and were also not provided with basic facilities of life. An organization with the name American Correctional Association (ACA) was formed. The basic work of ACA was to formulate laws which can help to improve the conditions of correctional facilities and the people (The prisoners and inmates) who are living or working at these facilities.
