Countering Terrorism

Introduction

The British policy on countering the increasing threat of terrorism in the modern world has been defined in this report. Since, the emergence of the terrorist groups, mainly including Al- Qaeda and Taliban, mostly all the nations throughout the world have felt a need to alter their policy in countering the threat of terrorism. The threat of terrorism continues to dominate the headlines of merely every newspaper throughout the world. In addition to that, it is important to note that the policy making of the developed countries have also been in question by the media as well as the citizens of the country. Statistically, the risk of terrorism does not pose to be significant threat, especially after the death of the leader of Al- Qaeda, known as Osama Bin Laden. An estimate shows that in the United Kingdom, in 2005, the number of people killed by the means of terrorist violence was 1 in 5 million people. However, the threat of terrorism is taken extremely seriously by the governments. This is due to the examples of lesser developed countries such as India and Pakistan as well as Afghanistan and other countries. Since the attack on the United States in September 2001, merely all the nations have felt an urgency to alter their political policies.

This issue is especially significant in the area of politics as with the passage of time and the increasing literacy rate as well as the exposure of media, the governments are easily targeted by people on the policies that have not worked out in the past (Hewitt, S. 2008). In addition to that, it is important to note that a keen observation is done on every alteration of the policy. This is a demand in contemporary politics and has to be met by the governments as well as the leaders. Apart from that, the people have got matured and after some terrorizing events in the past, an average literate citizen itself seeks to find ways of securing itself as well as its family. This is done by voting for the right leader, who would be able to protect the rights of the people as well as offer them security against terrorist activities. Thus, an average literate citizen trusts the government to provide it with these necessities. This is one of the primary reasons why on every policy alteration, there are different viewpoints which are openly discussed in the media as well as in public. In addition to that, the system of democracy provides the people with the power to choose their leader. This system also allows them to change their leader for that matter. This could be done in various ways including protests, etc.
